About Alpha Esquires

The Alpha Esquires program began as the Alpha MEN-tor Program in September 2010. The program was aimed at mentoring young men in grades 9-12.  The inaugural group of participants consisted of five young men who were beginning high school.  In the fall of 2011, the Alpha MEN-tor program was renamed the Alpha Esquires, and began accepting young men in grades 7-12.  In June of 2014, the inaugural group of five graduated from high school and were celebrated at the First Annual Alpha Esquires Beautillion.

The Alpha Esquires program is a pre-college mentoring program designed to enhance the knowledge, skills, and attitudes towards various aspects of life pertinent to African American males from middle school to high school and beyond. The purpose of the Alpha Esquires program is to develop the skills to achieve throughout high school, college, and build a foundation to become productive citizens within their community.

The Alpha Esquires program meets two Saturdays a month. These meetings will consist of formal meetings and activities promoting academic achievement and college preparation.

BUSINESS:

The Alpha Esquires program focuses on developing a college portfolio and developing skills to handle business matters and social issues. This includes college prep, financial, male/female relationships and etiquette workshops. Esquires will be exposed to internship opportunities. Additionally, the young men have access to 50+ professional males from all career paths.

COMMUNITY SERVICE:

The Alpha Esquires program participates in service projects such as The Dream Center, The Los Angeles Food Bank, and the Los Angeles Sickle Cell Center Toy Drive. The Esquires’ aim is to develop the necessity of serving those who may be less fortunate than themselves.

SCHOLARSHIP:

All Esquires participate in academic tracking to help each student develop their goals. Esquires regularly attend tutoring sessions and test preparatory sessions for all of the major standardized tests (CST, PSAT, SAT). Esquires develop their portfolios toward a High School GPA that makes them eligible for the Beta Psi Lambda Scholarship and others, which we help them find and apply for.

FELLOWSHIP:

All Esquires are also able to participate in trips to Sky Zone Trampoline Park, Bowling, attending Los Angeles Dodgers Game, trips to Step Shows, creating Soap Box Racers and other various activities to help build the bond between the young men and the mentors.
